As you are all aware we had an unfortunate incident at JO Combs School earlier today. Preliminary information was sketchy as I am sure you can understand it was a very chaotic scene for all involved. It was first reported that a young man had taken a 2 liter bottle of chlorine to school and when he added tin foil to the liquid there was an explosion. It was also first believed that there were 4 victims.
A thorough investigation that included in depth interviews with the boy have revealed new information. Apparently the boy had been experimenting with the manufacturing of explosives for some time as is evidenced by old burns on his person. The 2 liter bottle contained drain cleaner that reacted to the tin foil added to it causing an explosion. As a result of the explosion there were 4 victims immediately identified. As the day progressed, 4 additional victims came forward and identified themselves. Detectives have confirmed all 4 initial victims were treated and released, including the young lady who received chemical burning of the eyes. All injuries are being classified as minor. We are encouraging anyone who believes they were injured as a result of this explosion to call the Pinal County Sheriff's Office at 18004208689. UPDATE: The juvenile suspect has been arrested and booked into the Pinal County Juvenile Detention Center for the following: - 8 counts of Aggravated Assault
- 1 count of Disorderly Conduct
- 1 count of Disposal of an Explosive
- 1 count of Disruption of an Educational Institution
